A bold step toward New Zealand’s clean energy future is taking shape in the heart of Wairarapa. New Zealand Clean Energy, has officially launched the Masterton Solar & Energy Storage Project – a cutting-edge initiative set to power tens of thousands of homes while setting new standards for transparency and sustainability.
“This flagship project isn’t just about solar panels and batteries—it’s about building trust, driving innovation, and engaging communities in the journey to a low-carbon future”, commented George Hughes, COO of the company. As the very first project to be featured on Bravetrace’s trusted transparency platform, Masterton is paving the way for greater visibility into environmental impact—an essential ingredient in gaining public confidence in clean energy.
A Solar Giant with a Local Heart
Spread across 147 hectares of farmland near Masterton, the project will integrate ~166,000 solar panels over 138 hectares—while preserving land use for continued sheep grazing. With a generation capacity of 100 MW and a powerful battery storage system (91 MW / up to 400 MWh), the site will deliver clean electricity to more than 20,000 homes and cut CO₂ emissions by over 100,000 tonnes each year.
Why Masterton? The site was chosen for its sunny conditions, proximity to the local substation, and—crucially—strong backing from the local community. The panels will follow the sun using a single-axis tracking system, boosting efficiency and minimizing their impact on the land.
More Than Energy: A Project That Gives Back
Beyond generating power, the Masterton project is designed to spark wider benefits:
- Via the BraveTrace network, allowing NZ Companies to purchase trusted and valuable NZ-ECs
- Greater energy security through local generation
- Over 100 jobs created during construction
- Economic opportunities for local suppliers and contractors
- Education programs for schools and community groups
- Public open days and on-site learning experiences
Construction is expected to kick off in early 2026, with completion targeted for late 2026. Once operational, the site will play a direct role in helping New Zealand achieve its bold goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2030.
As a key player in New Zealand’s energy transition, NZCE develops, builds, and operates large-scale renewable energy projects to deliver clean, reliable, and sustainable power. “We’re committed to a greener future—and innovation is at the core of how we get there” says the COO.
NZCE is especially proud to highlight this milestone project on the Bravetrace network—a platform that champions accountability and open data. Together, we’re lighting the way to a cleaner, more transparent energy future.
